Location: Bageshwar, Uttarakhand 263642, India

Estimated Visit Time: 3-6 days

One of Uttarakhand’s charming towns, Bageshwar is quite popular due to its natural beauty and revered shrines. This location, carved out of the well-known Almora district, is still rife with religious stories, mythological significance, breathtaking scenery, and joyful events. At the meeting point of the Sarayu and Gomti rivers, at an elevation of 1004 meters, is this stunning holy site surrounded by foggy hills. Since the scriptures claim that Bageshwar is still genuinely blessed by Lord Shiva, also known as Sada Shiva, this location is frequently called the “Abode of Gods.” Most of the well-known shrines in this town are dedicated to different avatars of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The quaint town’s religious significance, attracting millions of followers from around the state and beyond, is its claim to fame. This holy town’s origins are partially explained by a mythological tale. The town’s oldest temple, Baghnath Temple, is in the region’s central region. According to the Skanda Puran’s legendary tales, Rishi Basistha carried out Lord Brahma’s directive to bring the Sarayu river. Rishi Markandey could not be brought in since he was meditating. In this trying time, Rishi Basistha appealed to Lord Shankar for guidance. In response to the pleas, Lord Shiva appeared in the shape of Bygra or Bagh, while Goddess Parvati arrived in the region as a cow or gau. As he went, Sarayu poured from his meditation site, and Lord Shiva, pleased by his prayers, praised Rishi Markandey, giving the holy place its name. The city’s name, Bageshwar, comes from the term “Byagreshwar,” in which “God” is represented by Ishwar and “tiger” by Byagra. In addition to its spiritual holiness, Bageshwar is a stunning destination for thrill-seekers and a trekker’s dream come true. It should be mentioned that Adi Sankaracharya was the first to hike through the massive Himalayas in the eighth century AD, eventually creating the paths for hiking in this area. Although the hiking paths were only accessible during the summer until recently, they are now available year-round. Only Bageshwar is the access point to the well-known Kafni, Pindari, and Sunderdunga glaciers.
