Cherrapunji

Location: Cherrapunji‎, Meghalaya, India.

Visit Time: The best time to visit Cherrapunji is from October to February, which is the winter season. Although the weather can be quite cold sometimes, a lot of the days are sunny as well with no rain making it an ideal time to visit the caves and the double-decker root bridge.

Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on the planet and the only place in India to receive rain throughout the year. The town of Cherrapunji is nestled in the East Khasi Hills about 50 km southwest of the state’s capital, Shillong. It is also known as Sohra or Churra means ‘The Land of Oranges’. The cliffs of Cherrapunji also offer stunning views of the plains of Bangladesh. While the debate about the wettest place on earth is an ongoing one, Mawsynram, also in Meghalaya, is known to receive higher rainfall than Cherrapunji. Cherrapunji itself receives a staggering 11,777 mm of rainfall annually. Monsoon clouds that blow inland from the Bay of Bengal are stopped from moving further by the ridges of Cherrapunji.

    How to reach

By Road: Reaching Cherrapunji by road is an annoying task because it’s not well-connected to other cities in India. If you want to travel to Cherrapunji by road, you can take a government-run or private bus to the Guwahati bus stand, which is located in Paltan Bazaar near the Guwahati Railway Station. From the Guwahati bus stand, you can either board a state-run bus or hire a private taxi or rent a sumo to Cherrapunji. Another option to reach Cherrapunji by road is to board a bus to the inter-city bus stand at Shillong, and then take a cab for Cherrapunji.
By Train: Cherrapunji has no railway station of its own. The closest railway station is in Guwahati, which is called the ‘Guwahati Railway Station’. It is well-connected to the rest of the country and it is the closest railway station to there. You can easily hire a taxi or board a bus from here to reach there. Regular trains ply to and from Guwahati Railway Station.
By Air: Cherrapunji is a famous tourist destination but it does not have a functioning airport. This is the reason why people often wonder how to reach there by air.
