Diu, also known as Deo in Indo-Portuguese, is a town in Diu district in the Damaon region of India. It is a coastal city on the eastern tip of the Indian island of Diu. The island is connected to the state of Gujarat through a bridge. Diu district is the 10th least populated district in India. The town of the city is located on the eastern tip of the island of this city and is known for its castle and old Portuguese cathedral. It is a fishing town. The city is one of the hundreds of Indian cities participating in a national-level competition to receive funding under Narendra Modi’s flagship Smart City Mission. This city will compete against 20 cities across India for one of the final 10 spots. In April 2018, it was reported that Diu Smart City has already become the first city in India to run on 100 percent renewable energy during the day. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, Dieu Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese fort, has a lighthouse and cannon. Inland, the century-old St. Paul’s Church was built in the elaborate Baroque style. Nearby, the whitewashed St. Thomas Church is now home to the Dieu Museum, which houses wood carvings and religious artifacts.
