    There is a long history behind Fort Aguada. The construction of this fort was started in 1609 by the Portuguese who ruled the region at that time and it was completed in 1612 under Viceroy Ruy Tavara’s supervision. The meaning of the word Aguada is freshwater in the Portuguese language. The fort was built to guard and defend the Portuguese stronghold from the Dutch and Maratha attacks. A four-storied lighthouse was erected on the fort’s premises in 1864.

    Fort Aguada is a fantastic piece of architecture. It is made in Portuguese military-style architecture. It was constructed using laterite stone which was found in Goa. It was categorized into two parts- the upper part and the lower part. The upper part was designed to serve as a huge watering station and the lower part extended a safe berth for ships belonging to the Portuguese rulers in Goa.

    By Air: The nearest airport to Aguada fort is the Goa International airport. Which is located at a distance of 42.8 km from the renowned place. Local transports are available at the airport. By hiring them you can reach your destination easily. 

    By Train: The Dabolim railway station is the closest railway station to the Aguada fort. It is about 39.8 km away from the fort. This railway station is well connected with the other cities of the state and with the other major cities of India. You will easily find taxis or cabs at the railway station which can take you to your destination.
