The beautiful city of Akhnoor is located about 28 kilometers from Jammu in the foothills of the Himalayas and attracts tourists from all over the world for its mesmerizing beauty and historical attractions. Akhtar has a number of historical attractions, such as Akhnur’s forts and caves where the Pandavas are believed to have lived during their exile.

The fort is one of the most important historical sites in Jammu and Kashmir. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India have established the fact that Akhnoor was one of the last bastions of the Indus Valley civilization and Manda.

History

The place was built by Raja Alam Singh in 1802. Work on the fort actually began in 1762 at the behest of Raja Tegh Singh. It was completed by his son Raja Alam Singh in 1802.

Inside/Outside Views

The place has high fortification walls with bastions at regular intervals and is crowned with battlements. There are two-storeyed watch-towers at the corners, which are crowned by battlements and merlons and this place has two parts which are bifurcated by a wall with a gate leading to the palace on the southern side. This fort is two-storeyed, and the walls facing the courtyard have decorated arches, some of which contain mural paintings.
