It is a part of the Churches of convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in Old Goa in Bainguinim which is about 10 km away from Panjim. It is a famous tourist destination in India. People from all over the world come to visit this place. This basilica is a wonderful creation of architecture. This church has cultural and religious significance. It is the oldest church in Goa and holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier.

    Basilica of Bom Jesus has a great historical background. It is older than the Taj Mahal. The construction of the Basilica of Bom Jesus was started in 1594 and it was finished on 15 May 1605 by the archbishop, Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. It contains the body of St. Francis Xavier, a very close friend of St. Ignatius Loyalo whit whom he founded the Society of Jesus. The body of St. Francis Xavier was first taken to the Portuguese and after two years it was shipped to Goa. It is said that the body of St. Francis Xavier was as fresh as the day it was baited. This is a mysterious thing which attracts tourists a lot. It is said that the saint has some miraculous powers of healing.

    The Basilica of Bom Jesus is made in the simple Baroque style of architecture. The façade of the building is built with black granite and is a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and composite styles. The floor of the Basilica of Bom Jesus is made of marble mosaic with precious stone which gives it a solemn appearance. The interior of the Basilica is simple but elegant. Which can take your attention. It also has an art gallery that exhibits Italian paintings. Those were made from 1973 to 1976. The main altar holds a huge statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. There is a garden inside the campus of Basilica of Bom Jesus.
