    History

    Bharathi ParkIn 1700, after capturing the Puducherry region from the Dutch, the French built a fort called Fort Louis and built a massive wall around the city. During the Carnatic War in the 1760s, the British defeated the French and demolished the fort. During the reign of Napoleon III as Emperor of France, the French built a harbor and lighthouse centered around the Ai Mandapam. The monument celebrates the gift of water to the French city. It is named after Aye, a lady courtesan who demolished her house to build a reservoir for the city. The park was used as a parade ground for the French Precinct until the 1940s. The Puducherry government turned the area into a park in the 1950s. Bharati Park is named after the great poet of Tamil Nadu Bharathidasan. The park was renovated in 2006 for public use with a fence and four iron gates with four iron gate entrances to the park between beautiful stone pillars.

    By Rail: Villupuram Junction is the nearest railway station to Puducherry. It is only 37 km away. Chennai, Trichy, and Madurai have a substantial rail network that connects the railway junction.
