The iconic park monument or Ai Mandapam is located in the center of the park, adding to its beauty. A famous lady courtesan, it is dedicated to Aayi. Other prominent tourist attractions surrounding the park are the Raj Nivas, the Vidhan Sabha, the Ashram Dining Room, the Government Hospital, Hotel Quality, the Circle de Pondicherry Private Club, and the Romain Rolland Library.

It is a popular picnic location for its panoramic view. Ai Mandapam, a well-known monument, is located in the center of the park. It is named after Aayi, a well-known female courtesan. The park is surrounded by several structures including the Villa Aroom, the French Army Band, the Chamber of Commerce, and The General Hospital.


    In 1700, after capturing the Puducherry region from the Dutch, the French built a fort called Fort Louis and built a massive wall around the city. During the Carnatic War in the 1760s, the British defeated the French and demolished the fort. During the reign of Napoleon III as Emperor of France, the French built a harbor and lighthouse centered around the Ai Mandapam. The monument celebrates the gift of water to the French city. It is named after Aye, a lady courtesan who demolished her house to build a reservoir for the city. The park was used as a parade ground for the French Precinct until the 1940s. The Puducherry government turned the area into a park in the 1950s. Bharati Park is named after the great poet of Tamil Nadu Bharathidasan. The park was renovated in 2006 for public use with a fence and four iron gates with four iron gate entrances to the park between beautiful stone pillars.

    By Air: Pondicherry Airport (PNY) is 6 km from the city and Chennai International Airport (MAA) is around 150 km. They provide connectivity to several local and international flights. The best option is to fly to Chennai and then take a cab or bus to Puducherry.

    By Rail: Villupuram Junction is the nearest railway station to Puducherry. It is only 37 km away. Chennai, Trichy, and Madurai have a substantial rail network that connects the railway junction. After reaching the train station, passengers can avail of easily available and comfortable bus or taxi services.

    By Road: A well-maintained motorable road is one of the most affordable and easy ways to reach Puducherry. Several state and private buses connect Puducherry with most of the South Indian cities. East Coast Road (ECR) is a breathtakingly beautiful road that takes you to Puducherry as you enjoy the mesmerizing view of the sea. You can even opt for a comfortable taxi ride from the top car rental companies in Pondicherry.
