On the Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh, Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main ghat in Varanasi. It is probably the most spectacular ghat and is located near the Vishwanath Temple. The literal meaning of the Dashashwamedh is the Ghat of the ten sacrificed horses. Two Hindu legends are associated with it: according to one, Brahma sacrificed ten horses here during the Dasa-Ashwamedha yagna, and according to another, Brahma created it to welcome Shiva. In 1748, the present ghat was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao. In 1774, a few decades later, Ahilyabahi Holkar, the Queen of Indore rebuilt the ghat. For performing Pitru Shradh, Tarpan, and Asthi Visarjan for ancestors, The Dashashwamedh Ghat has immense significance. For performing the Shradh Karma, people come here from across the globe.
