    The iconic Etiben Memorial Tower of Mopungchuket village under the Mokokchung district is being brought down to make way for a new one in its place, which could be termed a bittersweet development.  Measuring 31 feet tall and standing on a base 9 feet high, Etiben Memorial Tower was constructed and inaugurated in 1972.  On May 1, 1972, Etiben Memorial Tower was inaugurated by Koramoa Jamir, Minister of PWD Nagaland, regarded as perhaps the first concrete view tower in the region.

    Attraction

    One could see the snow-capped Himalayan mountain range, the plains of Assam, and the Brahmaputra to the north, as well as the hills of Burma to the east, from atop the tower.  The tower has become a prominent landmark in the village with the emergence of Mopungchuket as a popular rural tourism destination in Nagaland.

    Eiben Memorial Tower or ‘Missa’ as it is known to the villagers, Offers an undisturbed 360° view of the area from atop the tower, was renovated several times over the years until the villagers determined to finally bring it down.  Owned by the Mongsen phratry of the village, this tower is community property.

    The new structure will be an exact replica of the old one but ‘taller, bigger and stronger, the Etiben Tower Construction Committee said. The new tower is said to be 10 feet taller than the old one,50 feet tall. The committee also said that within this year itself the construction of the new building will be completed and will be inaugurated on May 1 of 2022, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the old one.

    It is usually open 24hours for the visitors but is temporarily closed now as the construction work is going on.

    By Air: At Assam, Jorhat, the nearest airport from Mokokchung is located. From the airport to the Mokokchung district headquarter is at a distance of 112 km.  From many major cities of India, there are daily flights to this airport. Next is the airport in Dimapur, Nagaland airport, which is located at a distance of 212 km from the town, of Mokokchung. This airport is well connected with various cities in the country like New Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati, and is also the only airport in the state of Nagaland. You can travel by air to Jorhat and take a hired taxi or daily Tata Sumo services to visit Mokokchung.

    By Rail: From  Mokokchung District, Assam, Mariani Junction is the nearest railhead.  From the Mokokchung district headquarter, it is set roughly at a distance of 86.4 km.

    By Road: If one prefers to take the journey from Dimapur  There are plenty of Buses both available day and night in shared Tata Sumo services to Mokokchung.This will take time of around  6 to 8 hours. From Guwahati to Mokokchung town and vice versa, daily direct night bus services of Blue Hills and Network travel are also available.
