    Located in Panaji, the capital of the state of Goa, India, Fontainhas is an old Latin Quarter. Its architecture of it has Portuguese influence. In the Portuguese language “Fontainhas” means little fountains. It represents the traditional Portuguese influence in the area. There you will find some colorful houses with red-tiled roofs and narrow and picturesque winding streets which feel like you are in a European street. It is an important reason why visitors find this place so stunning. Goa is mostly known for its beach, but this place will change your perspective. It is situated at the foot of the Altinho hills and it is bounded by an ancient creek which is named Ourem creek.

    History

    It is said that a man named Antonio Jiao de Sequeira was the person who established Fontainhas. He made his fortune while working in Mozambique. It was made in 1770. In the mid-18th century, the Portuguese moved their capital to Panjim and chose Fontainhas as the residential area for the government administrators. A government administrator came to Goa in 1844 and after seeing the condition of the people, he passed an order that from now on, even the people who belong to the lower strata of the society appear and work in proper clothes. A marvelous street with a wonderful parapet which was Rua Nova d’ Ouremsea was also built by him.

    Fontainhas is an excellent piece of architecture and it looks amazing. The houses are painted with vibrant colors like blue, red, yellow, and green. Which exhibits a colonial charm with its red tile roofs, oyster shell windows, and intricately designed iron railing. The special feature of these erstwhile Portuguese homes is their plates on the walls, which are made with Azulejos ceramic tiles. Azulejos are hand-painted ceramic tiles in Portuguese style which are decorated with intricate, colorful artwork backed in high temperature. It looks excellent.
