This place has a lot of history. It is the first European fort in India. Fort Kochi was a fishing village. This is about the year 1498.  At that time the sea route was used to go from India to Europe. The fort was built to assist in various battles during the British and Portuguese occupation of the Indian subcontinent. Which is now known as Fort Kochi. The king of that time agreed to build a fort called Fort Emmanuel to protect them. But after building it, the Dutch destroyed the fort. Part of that ruined mound is now known as Fort Kochi. The Portuguese established a permanent settlement with a wooden church behind the fort in 1517. This church is still there.  It is now known as Francis Church. After the defeat of the Portuguese by the Dutch, the various historical places of India which were built by the Portuguese were completely destroyed by the dutch. But they did not destroy fort Kochi. They occupied Fort Kochi for 112 years.  Then when the British defeated the Dutch, they were forced to leave the south of the place.  And after that India became independent from the British. Since then this has become very popular in the Indian subcontinent.
