Gadisar lake was built by Raja Rawal Jaisal in around 12th-13th AD who was the first king of the state and the city of Jaisalmer. The lake was made to provide drinking water to the people of the area and make up for the aridity of the city.

The area where the lake was built was automatically able to gather and retain rainwater. The lake was a life-saving source of water for the people of the city at that time. That is why many people believe it was a natural oasis in the middle of the Thar desert but it was a manmade one. Maharawal Gadsi Singh renovated this lake in 1400 AD and the lake was later named after him.
