    History

    Government Botanical Garden

    The Government Botanical Garden, Udhagamandalm was established in 1848. Its designer was William Graham McIvor.The Marquis of Tweedale prepared the initial layout throughout the late 1840s. The gardens were found by a subscription of Rs three per month amongst the EU residents with the aim of provision vegetables at an inexpensive cost. throughout the time that Ootacamund was under British control, the EU settlers and others carried substantial cultivation of vegetables for the market. Captain Molyneux of the 2d European Regiment managed the vegetable cultivation. The subscribers received vegetables freed from cost. however this arrangement didn’t estimate and in early 1847, a fund was raised by means of donations and subscriptions with a read to forming a horticultural society and a public garden.

    Government Botanical Garden

    The garden is home to many exotic and native species including shrubs, ferns, herbs, bonsai, and trees. The main attraction of the garden is the trunk of a fossil tree that is more than 20 million years old. The tree was brought to the garden by the Geological Survey of India from the National Fossil Park, Tiruvakkarai, South Arcot District, Tamil Nadu. The fossil tree is the last example of a Polystratum fossil and is believed to have been carried by rivers and filled with silica for years.
