    The Japanese temple is accessed from near the main market in Sarnath. It is just behind the government-run tourist bungalow. This Japanese temple has a typical Japanese aesthetic, with a two-storied pagoda with a sloping roof and curved roof giving a very serene feel. It is run by the Dharmachakra Indo-Japan Buddhist Cultural Society, and a placard outside the temple indicates that. Nichigai Suzan Horinji Temple is the original name of the Japanese temple but it is commonly referred to as ‘Japanese Temple’ by local guides and tourists. The beautiful architecture of the temple is reminiscent of the world-famous Japanese temples located in Kyoto, Japan. Before the main temple, on the right side, there is a statue of the Buddha in a calm pose beneath a tree. The aura of serenity inside the temple is believable. There is a huge wooden statue of Buddha in a reclining posture with a delicate design on the head. The Buddhist mantra of Na Mu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo is near the main statue. The fragrance of sandalwood is an added attraction as all the small idols and other wooden furniture are made of sandalwood. For meditation and calm, it is a perfect place. Sometimes Japanese tourists are seen spotted laying prostrate on the ground in devotion.
