    History

    The Kutch Museum was first established as a part of the School of art. It was established by Khengarji III, the Maharao of Kutch State. It was founded on the first July 1877.

It was founded on the first July 1877. On 19 February 1884 at the time of Maharao Khengarji III’s marriage, many new items were received and for the exhibition of which, a new building was needed. Because of that, on November 14, 1884, the foundation stone for the present Museum building was laid by Sir James Ferguson, who was the Governor of Bombay and it was named as Ferguson museum. The museum was constructed in the Italian Gothic Style. The construction cost of two floors was Rs. 32000. The designer of the building was Engineer- Mc Garden and built by local builders who were known as Mistress of Kutch under the supervision of Jairam Ruda Gajdhar- the state Gaither.

    This museum is divided into almost 11 sections. The archaeological department has Indus postage stamps. Here you will find different kinds of stone tablets also. A section of the museum is devoted to tribal cultures. It has many examples of ancient artifacts, folk arts, crafts, and tribal peoples.

    Kutch Museum opens every day of the week without Wednesday and public holidays. The opening and closing time of the museum is 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2.30 pm to 5:00 pm.
