The construction of the lake was started by Banjara transmen, Pichhu Banjara who used to transport grain under the reign of Maharaja Lakha.
The lake attracted Maharana Udai Sing so much that he established the city of Udaipur on the bank of this wonderful lake. He also established a dam on the shore of the lake.
Over a while, several islands, palaces, mansions, temples, and bath ghats were added to the lake, which makes it more attractive to tourists.
The lake palace is on the right in the middle of the lake, which was constructed on Jag island. Mohan. Mandir, built by Jagar Singh is one of the most attractive attractions of the surrounding lake. It was built between 1628-1652.
The famous City Palace, Udaipur lies on the shore of the lake from where boats ply to another part of the lake from Bansi Ghat. Situated on the western part of lake Arsi Vilas which is a bird sanctuary and Sitamata Game Sanctuary is another attraction of this place.
Various arch bridges were added to beautify the lake. Those are built at places where the lake narrows so that the water can reach the bank.
