Located near Leh in Ladakh, India, Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill. The optical illusion of a hill is created by the layout of the area and surrounding slopes. On the hill road, objects and cars may appear to roll uphill in defiance of gravity, as the hill road is actually a downhill road when they are, in fact, rolling downhill. On Srinagar-Ladakh Road, it is 7.5 km southeast of Nimmo and 26.5 km west of Leh.

Located about 30km from Leh City, this small stretch of road is unique because of its outright defiance of gravity. This road attracts stationary vehicles upwards, as a part of the Leh-Kargil Highway. A car can roll up at a speed of 20km/hr. on this hill, when left with the engine off. It has been given many names like ‘Mystery Hill’ and ‘Gravity Hill’, due to this extraordinary phenomenon. The Sindhu River runs on the eastern side of this hill, situated at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level.
Stating the exact spot, authorities have put up a billboard in the area where this phenomenon can be observed. Indicating the exact point where the car should be parked in neutral, a yellow box marked on the road. Climbing slowly up the hill, it can be seen from there. At about a distance of 30km from Leh, the Magnetic Hill is part of a barren region. Therefore, it is more or less a secluded area, apart from tourists. It is always advisable to check into a hotel at Leh City and drive to the hill from there, while you may find a couple of homestays in the area. Make sure you have packed enough food before you set out on your journey to this mystery hill, as there are not many food joints or restaurants in the area. In Armenia, the Magnetic Hill in Ladakh in fact has a sibling, which is known as Mount Ararat, and when it actually goes downslope, this hill also seems to be going upwards.
