Between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. Located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India; It comes under the Darjeeling Wildlife Division and can be reached in 30 minutes from Siliguri. The sanctuary is spread over 159 km*2 of reserved forest and was started in 1955 as a game sanctuary. In 1959, it received the status of a sanctuary mainly to protect the Indian Bison and the Royal Bengal Tiger, which were threatened with extinction.
