    Earlier known as Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens or popularly known as Lucknow Zoological Garden, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prani Udyan is a 71.6-acre (29.0 ha) zoo located in the heart of the capital city of Uttar Pradesh which was named after Wajid Ali Shah– the last Nawab of Awadh.  It is a large zoo, according to the Central Zoo Authority of India. In the year of 1921, the Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens was established to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lucknow.  From Sir Harcourt Butler, the Governor of the State, the idea of establishing Zoological gardens at Lucknow emanated.

    History

    The name of “Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens Trust, Lucknow” was changed by the Uttar Pradesh Govt,  Van Anubhag-4, dated 4 June 2001, to “Lucknow Prani Udyan”.With the Forest Secretary to the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh as Chairman, the zoo is being managed as a trust by the Zoo Advisory Committee, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Uttar Pradesh as Vice Chairman, and the Chief Wildlife Warden, Uttar Pradesh as Administrator. For the overall day-to-day management of the zoo, an officer of the rank of Deputy Conservator of Forests is posted as Director.  To start a cell bank or a ‘frozen zoo’ for the conservation of endangered species, in 2012, there was a proposition.

    About 1,100,000–1,200,000 visitors annually are received by the zoo. To 463 mammals, 298 birds, and 72 reptiles representing 97 species, the zoo is home, including the royal Bengal tiger,  Asiatic lion, gray wolf, hoolock gibbon, white Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, blackbuck, swamp deer, Himalayan black bear,  barking deer, hog deer,  zebra, European otters, hill mynahs, giant squirrels, great pied hornbill, Asiatic elephant, giraffe, golden pheasant, silver pheasant, etc.  Swamp deer, blackbuck, hog deer and barking deer, white tiger, Indian wolf, and several pheasants are successfully bred by the zoo. Exhibiting an orangutan (the other being the Kanpur Zoo), it is one of the only two zoos in India.

    How to Reach

    By Air: The nearest airport is Lucknow Airport, which is located around 14 km away from the city center. Lucknow can be easily reached by air from anywhere in India. Outside the airport, local taxis are available and anyone can avail of taxis to travel anywhere in the city.

    By Road: Lucknow is connected to major cities of India with a wide road network. The main highways that pass through Lucknow are NH28, NH25, and NH56. Buses for Lucknow are easily available from other nearby cities. One can also hire cabs to reach anywhere in Lucknow from nearby places.

    By Train: The major railway station in Lucknow is the Lucknow Railway Station at Charbagh. It connects Lucknow with many other cities of India via a good number of mail and superfast trains. Passenger trains from nearby cities also ply to and from Lucknow. Several other railway stations like Alamnagar, Gomti Nagar, Aishbagh junction, etc. also serve the city. One can take a taxi to reach anywhere in the city from the station.
