Paradesi Synagogue is located in Kochi city in Kerala. Samuel Castiel, David Bella, and Joseph Levi are the builder of this Paradesi Synagogue. They were Portuguese-speaking Jews. Originally the Jews came to India for business purposes. They usually built their places of worship in the places where they had to go for business. They were subjected to religious persecution at various times in India. This is why they built their shrines to stay together. So when the Jews came to Kochi for business purposes in the 14th century, they built this shrine in Kochi which is known as the Paradesi Synagogue. Paradesi Synagogue is popularly known as Mattancherry Synagogue.
