    Situated in Old Goa, at Panjim, Se Cathedral is dedicated to the St. Catherine of Alexandria. This church was constructed under Portuguese rule. It is one of the largest churches not only in India but also in Asia. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Goa, India. People from different places of the world come to visit this church every year. It has been recognized as one of the world heritage sites by UNESCO.     History

    The word Se is a Portuguese word that means “See.” This church was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque over a Muslim army. This church was commissioned by Governor George Cabral to be in 1552on the remains of an earlier structure. In 1552 the construction of the church began in the reign of King Dom Sebastiao. In 1619 construction of the Cathedral was completed. 

    The church had initially two towers but one was collapsed in 1776 and it wasn’t rebuilt. The Cathedral was presented with “The Golden Rose” by Venerable Pope Pius XII in 1953. The Golden Rose is an ornament, which the popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally blessed and conferred as a token of affection.

    The Se Cathedral is made in the Portuguese-Manueline style of architecture. There were two different techniques were consumed to make this beautiful church. The exterior was made in Tuscan style and the interior has been made in Corinthian style. It is about 250 feet high and 181 feet wide. The interior decoration of the church is excellent. 

    The Se Cathedral has a large bell which is popularly known as the “Golden Bell” on account of its rich tone. The main altar of this church is devoted to Catherine of Alexandria. There you will find several ancient paintings. On the right side, there is a Chapel of the “Cross of Miracles” where a vision of Christ is said to have appeared in 1619. This church also has a baptismal font made in 1532 and it was used by St. Francis Xavier.

    Se Cathedral opens every day of the week. Even it is open on public holidays. It opens at 7:30 am and closes at 6:00 pm.

    There is no entry fee in this holy place. Visitors can visit it free of cost.

    How to Reach

    By air: The nearest airport to Basilica of Bom Jesus is Goa international airport. It is about 29.6 km away from the church. It is well connected with the other major cities of India. At the airport, you can find local transport which can take you to the renowned place.

    By train: The Karmali Railway Station is located at a distance of 31.2 km from the Basilica of Bom Jesus. This railway station is also well connected with the other major cities of India. To reach your destination, you need to hire any local transport which is available at the railway station.

    visitors are just allowed to carry small bags.  So keep your things in a small bag.

    Carry your photo ID card. You can also carry a water bottle and a camera with you. It is a great place for photography.
