    Commonly known as St. Mary’s Church, Secunderabad, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption is a minor basilica located in Secunderabad, India. On 7 November 2008, the decree designating it as a basilica was issued. On Sarojini Naidu Road in Secunderabad, the St Mary’s Basilica church is located. Along with Bishop Carew, it owes its early history to Father Daniel Murphy, St. Mary’s Church was completed in 1850. The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad was its oldest name. It ceased to be a cathedral, in the year 1886. A few nuns from St. Anne at Turin came here in the year 1871 and opened a school that is popular as St. Ann’s school. In the city of Secunderabad, India, St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Roman Catholic church. To the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is dedicated.

    In the British Army, the church began with the work of Fr. Daniel Murphy among Irish Catholics. In the year of 1839, he arrived in India and began the construction of St. Mary’s church as a cathedral in 1840. In the year  1850, it was completed and blessed and was at that time the largest church in Hyderabad State. In the year 1886, When the see was moved from Secunderabad to Hyderabad, the church ceased to be a cathedral.

    With curved arches and pointed buttresses, the church is a typical example of the Indian Gothic style. St. Mary’s has several side altars dedicated to saints, as with other Catholic churches. Brought from Italy in 1901, the church has four bells. To have developed cracks, one of the bells is reported.

    By Rail: From other major cities of the country, there are no regular trains to Secunderabad. Begumpet railway station is the nearest Railway station to Hyderabad located at a distance of 10 km. There are also other railway stations in Hyderabad.

    BY ROAD: From the bus stand, regular services of state roadways and privately owned buses of the city are available. With important cities and states, roads are also well connected. To reach your desired destination, you can also hire rented cars or taxis.
