History

Lake Sursagar was originally a small pond formerly known as Chandan Talav. In 1750 the lake was extended by a Mughal ear tax collector named Sureshwar Desai, thus named Sursagar.

There are several underground gates. Which were constructed to empty the lake in case there are any signs of overflowing. Earlier this lake was the only major drinking water source for the people of the city of Vadodara. Under the reign of Malhar Rao Gaekwad walls and ghats were made on its periphery between 1870- and 1875.

Lake Sursagar is small but very beautiful. It is quite a crowded place. There is a market near the lake. Vadodara Municipal Corporation constructed a tall Lord Shiva Statue which is about 120ft tall at the center of the lake in 2002. This is the main attraction of the lake. During the festival Shiva Ratri, the huge statue is decorated with lights. The lake is filled with water all year. There are many temples on the bank of the lake. At the time of sunset, the lake just looks amazing. The concrete wall surrounds the lake which can be used by the visitors for sitting. On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, people crowded its bank for the immersion of Lord Ganesha Idols.
