    It was founded in 1949 by Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai. At that time, Ahmedabad had a growing textile industry

The museum was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India. It was first housed at The Calico Mills. Later on, in 1983, it was shifted to the Sarabhai House in Shahibaug. The Museum was inspired by Ananda Coomaraswamy.

It has two separate sections for textiles- the religious clothing section and the historic textile section. Which are bordered by green gardens and fountains. In the historic textile section, the court textiles used by the Mughals and local rulers of the 15th-19th centuries are displayed. The religious section displays ritual art, temple hangings, sculpture, miniature paintings, Jain art, and sculpture and furniture. 

    There is a library which has a lot of books related to textile and art. There are also galleries of textile techniques. The museum authority protects the textiles from dust, air, and pollution. The authority also organizes workshops for the students and researchers to understand the textile industry in a better way.

    The opening time of the museum is 10:30 am and the closing time is 12:30 pm

    Entry & Others Fees

    There is no entry fee in the museum. It is free for all visitors. But for visiting the museum you have to register your name and book your name there. Because the authority allows just 20 visitors in one batch. Children under 10 years of age are not allowed in the Museum.

    The city of Ahmadabad can be reached by air, train, or bus easily.

    By Air: The nearest airport to the Calico Museum of Textiles is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport. Which has both international and domestic flights. It is 5.2 km away from the museum. At the airport, you will find taxis and cabs to go to your destination.  

    By Train: The nearest railway station to the Calico Museum of Textiles is the Kalupur railway station. Which is located at a distance of 3.8 km from the Museum. From the railway station, you can hire any taxi or cab to reach the Calico Museum of Textiles.

    Ans: Photography is not allowed inside the Calico Museum of Textiles. Visitors can’t take a picture in the museum.

    Ans: Mobile, Cameras, and belongings are not permitted inside the Museum. But notebooks, pencils, pens, water bottles, and napkins are allowed inside the Museum.
