    The construction of the gorgeous Umaid Bhawan Palace was started on 18 November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid Singh and ended in 1943.

    There is an interesting history associated with the building. This palace is linked to a curse by a saint who had said that “a period of drought would follow the good rule of the Rathore Dynasty”. 

    Jodhpur faced severe drought after the end of the reign of Pratap Singh and famine in the 1920s for three consecutive years. 

    The farmers of the area were, facing a hard time and wanted help from the Maharaja of that time, Maharaja Umaid Singh to provide them some employment and save them from their bad conditions. To help them Maharaja decided to build a great palace.

    This palace is huge in size. A part of this marvelous palace is managed as a hotel by Taj Hotels. It is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, who is the grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh. This huge palace has 347 rooms in total and it was the residence of the former royal family of Jodhpur. Another part of this palace is turned into a museum.
