Vizhinjam Lighthouse is located near the Kovalam sea beach in Kerala. There are several lighthouses in Kovalam. Among them, Vizhinjam lighthouse is more popular. Construction of the lighthouse in Kovalam began on June 30, 1972. Once vizhinjam was an important seaport. This seaport gained much popularity in the 18th to 19th centuries. But by the end of the 19th century, both its usefulness and its popularity began to decline. This is the oldest lighthouse in Kovalam. No lighthouse has been built in Kovalam before. But soon after it was built, several more lighthouses were built in places near Kovalam.
