Ward’s lake is named after Sir William Ward, the then Chief Commission of Assam.

Later on, this lake was constructed by Colonel Hopkins in the year 1894. A story about this lake is that a Khasi prisoner developed the area around the lake to change the monotony in his daily life routine.
