History

Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for the phumdis floating over it. The lake is located at Moirang in Manipur state, India.

For over 55 villages and hamlets, this Loktak Lake has been the primary origin of sustenance since primitive times. These people have been provided with food, water, occupation, shelter, and above all sustenance by the lake. To the local fishermen and other folks alike, the lake is home. From far and wide, tourists are invited by the lake for its ethereal beauty of it. The Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park all over the world is housed by this lake and is also the last refugee of some endangered animals, such as bore antlered deer which is known as the state animal of Manipur

For the birdwatchers, this lake is a visual treat, where he can find species like a black kite, East Himalayan pied kingfisher, northern hill myna, lesser eastern jungle crow, Burmese pied myna, and lesser skylark.

How to Reach

By air: With about a distance of 48km, Imphal international airport is the nearest airport to reach Loktak Lake. Major cities of the Indian state, Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Aizawl, Silchar, and Dimapur, are provided direct flights from this airport. From the airport, you can hire a cab or any other private transport to the Lake.

By Rail: With about a distance of 215 km from Imphal by road, the nearest railhead is at Dimapur on the broad gauge line of the Northeast Frontier Railways. Another railhead on the Manipur border is Jiribam around a distance of 225 km from Imphal. From the rail station, you have to hire a cab or another private transport to reach your destination.

By Road: From Imphal city, it is 48 km away. You can get public and private transport available here to reach the Lake.
