Famous for its Sambalpuri sari, This district is the western part of Odisha state. The district is surrounded by the Deogarh district to the east, Bargarh districts to the west, Jharsuguda district to the north, and Sonepur and Angul districts to the south. Sambalpur district has a history of events including the Indian freedom struggle representing different sectors of society. Sambalpur is mentioned in the Book of Ptomely as Sambalaka in the river Manada. This district was later divided into four separate districts.

By Air: Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar is the only international airport in Orissa and with a distance of almost 285 km, the only way to get there is Sambalpur, if you are coming from abroad.

By Rail: Sambalpur is one of the major railway hubs in Orissa and within the East Coast Railway Zone, Sambalpur serves as one of the three railway divisions.

By Road: The road connection between Sambalpur and all surrounding regions is quite good and getting there by road can be very convenient depending on where you are traveling to.
