The district’s capital, Uttarkashi, is a historic place with a rich cultural history, postcard-perfect scenery, and expansive vistas of the mountains. It is well-known as an old temple devoted to Lord Shiva and receives thousands of visitors annually. As the name implies, it’s regarded as the Kashi of the north (Uttar), another name for Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, which is the location of one of the most well-known Lord Shiva temples. Numerous temples honoring Lord Hanuman, Goddess Durga, Parshuram, Dattatrya, Bhairav, Annapurna, Laksheswar, Ekadashrudra, and other deities can be found all across Uttarkashi. High Himalayan peaks, verdant meadows, and numerous hot springs encircle it. It is covered in snow during the winter.
