History

Tholkappia Poonga, also known as Adyar Eco Park, was established in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to rehabilitate the damaged Adyar River stream and estuary. By recovering native plants and ecosystems, such as mangroves, grasslands, and tropical dry forests, the park, which was established in 2008, sought to revitalize this contaminated area. In the beginning, it was only used for ecological studies and was named for the old Tamil scholar Tholkappiyar. It eventually became accessible to the general public for guided tours, developing into a center for environmental education and an example of urban ecological restoration.
