    History

    The airport was constructed from 1987 to 1988 for the operation of Dornier 228 types of aircraft, and this airport was inaugurated on 16 April 1988, to be exact. Initially, the terminal was housed in a minimal and temporary structure. Then, construction of the terminal building, establishment of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, and other related structures commenced in the next 20 years (2006). However, the construction of the terminal building was once stopped midway due to the proposed runway extension. However, after the works were finally completed, Air India Regional began services with ATR-42 aircraft on 24 September 2010 that was connecting Agatti with Kochi. Finally, the runway was resurfaced completely in November 2010.

    By Air: Island Airport is a small airport in India with domestic/regional flights only. This airport has almost non-stop passenger flights scheduled to one and only destination (from Agatti is Cochin International Airport with Air India). From Cochin, there are some Air India flights that reach Agatti generally in one and a half hours. These operate six days a week.
