    History

The Alappuzha Light house or Alleppey Lighthouse has a long, fascinating history that gives you a mesmerizing effect dating back to the time when it was constructed in 1862. Marthanda Varma2, a Travancore king, started to build the lighthouse, but it was completed during the reign of Rama Varma Maharaja. The lighthouse was mainly used to help maritime navigation as Alappuzha was the busiest trade center and port at that time.  Basically,  the lighthouse used a double wick Coconut oil lamp, which was replaced by a DA gas flasher and a 500 mm drum optic in 1952.  However, after one year, the lighting system died, and a new type of lighting system named 4th order optic with a 1000-watt electric lamp was placed in 1960. The current system, which we can see,  a 230 V Metal Halide Lamp, was placed in 1999.
