    The Allahabad Museum is situated in the Civil Lines Area of the city in a beautiful greenery garden at Chandrashekhar Azad Park, also known as Company Bagh. It is about 12 km from the Bamrauli Airport and 3 km from the Allahabad, Rambagh & Prayagraj Junction. The Allahabad museum is enriched with diversified collections of art, textiles, antiquities, sculptures, paintings, ceramics, coins, illustrated manuscripts, archeological objects, decorative art objects, natural history specimens, photographs, prints, and personalia collections, including Gandhi, Nehru, and Literary personalities of Allahabad such as Sumitra Nandan Pant, Suryakant Tripathi “Nirala,” Mahadevi Verma and Premchand. Sir William Muir and Maharaja of Vijayanagar were appointed for the Museum to take care of the Museum and built an ornate building in 1878 as a house of collection.

    Under the patronage of Pandit Vyas, the Museum has rich and important versified collections. It included the ancient sculptures from Bharhut and Bhumra and the art collections of Abanindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, and Asit Kumar Haldar of the Bengal school paintings. It also has a collection of photographs by European artists like Anagarik Govinda and Nicholas Roerich. They are a German monk who contributed a lot to creating modern art galleries in the Museum. After that, in 1942, S.C. Kala, the first curator, took the initiative to collect Nehru Personalia collections at the Museum. The Museum has many historic sectors that attract visitors. It has an amazing collection of Sculptures. There is an exhibition gallery that tells about India’s struggle for independence. The Museum has a natural history related to flora and fauna. The Museum houses the unique and rich history and culture of India.

    History

    The Board of Revenue requested the Government of North-Western Provinces to introduce a library and Museum in 1863. After that, the provincial government gave donations, and the renowned orientalist Sir William Muir and the Maharaja of Vijayanagara were appointed Superintendent of the library and Museum. Later on, an ornate building was visible in 1878 and was used as a house of collection. Because of some uncertain issues or lacking funds, it was closed down in 1881. Then, in 1923-24, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the president of the Allahabad Municipal Board and Pt. Birjmohan Vyas took the initiative to establish a new museum. In 1931, the executive officer of the board, Pandit Brijmohan Vyas, was directed to make the Museum, and he was able to open a museum in the municipal building. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the present Museum on 14th December 1947. In 1954, the Museum was opened for all the visitors in the Chandrasekhar Azad Park or the Company Bagh Area. In 1986, the Museum was enriched with diversified collections of all sectors like art, antiquities, culture, and archeological artifacts. The Ministry of Culture took the Museum and constituted an autonomous body named Allahabad Society. The Museum is declared national importance by the Ministry of Culture Government of India. Nowadays, the Museum is under the financial control of the Ministry of Culture, the Government of India, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the ex-officio chairman of the Museum.

The gateway to the Museum is filled with architectural elements that tell us about the rich history and culture of Past India. It offers you a very peaceful environment throughout your visit to the museum. There are Mughal-era miniature paintings. It highlights the historical events and courtly scenes. There are sixteen different galleries for an exhibition named in memory of A.K. Coomaraswamy Memorial Hall. There is also a central hall. This hall frequently arranged various temporary exhibitions on other themes. It helps to rotate the art objects and antiquities from the museum’s reserve collections.

    How to Reach

    By Air: Bamrauli Airport is situated in the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, 12 kilometers away from the Museum. Kanpur, Varanasi, and Lucknow airports are also very close to Bamrauli Airport. Taxis and other motor vehicles are always available from the airport to any place in Allahabad. It is well connected to Delhi and other areas of India. From the airport, you can easily reach your desired place by using any vehicle. 

     

    By Road: You can also go to Allahabad by Road. Allahabad Bus Stand is the nearest bus stand to the Museum. It is probably 1.5 kilometers away from the Museum. Besides, there is also an awesome bus service from major Indian cities such as Meerut, Delhi, and Jhansi to Allahabad, provided by The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). You can take a cab or an auto-rickshaw from the bus stand to reach the Museum. National and state highways connect Prayagraj to the other parts of the country.

    By Train: Allahabad Railway Junction is the nearest railway station to the Allahabad Museum. It is about 3 km away. It is also close to the Prayagraj Railway Station and Rambagh Railway Station. It is well-connected to every city of Allahabad and other small cities in Uttar Pradesh. You can easily get a cab or other vehicle from here to reach the Museum.
