    The Bapu Museum, formerly known as the Victoria Jubilee Museum, is located on Vijaywadar MG Road. This is an archeological museum. It is named in the memory of renowned film director, cartoonist, illustrator, and writer Bapu. It is administrated by the Department of Archeology.

    History

    Bapu museum

    The museum was built in 1887 to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria, the foundation stone of which was laid by Robert Sewell, then District Collector of Krishna District. Initially housed in various art exhibitions, it was converted into an archeological museum in 1962 under the auspices of the Andhra Pradesh Government’s Department of Archeology and Museums.

    This place is full of attractions. Inside the museum, there is a huge collection of coins, swords, shields, bracelets, and ornaments used by the kings of that time are displayed in the historical gallery here. There are also various stone cut compositions. There is a permanent white limestone statue of Buddha (3rd-4th century) of Alluru, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Durga (who’re slaying the buffalo demon), and Mahishasura (2nd century) in this museum. There are many things like paintings, sculptures, etc inside the place.

    By Air: Vijayawada has its own airport but unfortunately, it is around 18 km away from the city. After reaching the railway junction, you can easily hire taxis, cabs, or take buses to reach your preferred destinations because it’s a short distance between Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam and Vijayawada city (around 6 km).

    By Road: Three national highways connect Vijayawada directly with other parts of the country. The Pandit Nehru bus station has more than 450 city buses as well as state buses including Metro Express, Deluxe, A/C, Non-A/C, Sleeper, etc. Among the interstate buses, privately owned buses such as Deluxe, Ultra-Deluxe, A/C, and Volvo buses play a very satisfactory role. As Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam is only around 6 km away from the city center, so it’s not difficult to reach there by cabs, taxis, or local buses.
