Birds Island of Odisha is located in the Chilika estuary near the Rambha area. It is situated only 5 kilometers from Rambha and around 50 kilometers from Berhampur town. It is an ideal place for a picnic and can be easily visited by boat. Varieties of residential birds made this an entertaining place in Chilika Lake. It is considered a paradise for native birds and migratory birds as well. This place is a tourist attraction near Berhampur.

Attraction

The main attraction of Birds Island is its big Dinosaur statue and the beautiful rocks. In the winter, different types of birds such as lesser flamingos, Goliath Heron, gray herons, purple herons, egrets, spoonbills, storks and black-headed ibis are seen here and there on the island.

History

Chilika Lake is the largest water lagoon in India and the second largest in the world. During the monsoon, it spans over 1100 square kilometers and decreases to about 906 kilometers during the dry season. Birds Island is a naturally formed part of this ecosystem. It has become a temporary habitat for a large number of birds that come from Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe. In the winter, thousands of birds, including various species of ducks, waders, and other waterfowl, migrate to this island. Birds Island and Chilika Lake are designated as the Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance) to recognize their ecological importance.
