History

Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, a well-known meditation master and member of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, established the monastery in 1984. The monastery was founded by Bokar Rinpoche, a close follower of Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa, with the intention of serving as a hub for Buddhist education and meditation. Bokar Monastery developed into a prominent center for the study and application of the Karma Kagyu teachings under his direction. It was soon known for its intense training in meditation, especially in the Mahamudra style, which is considered to be among the deepest in Tibetan Buddhism.
