    History

The Eden Gardens complex sprawls over a beautiful lush green land of fifty acres including the famous cricket stadium, an indoor stadium, many gardens, lakes, and a Pagoda. The Burmese Pagoda, adjacent to the lake, was literally brought to Kolkata from Burma/ Myanmar after the British victory in the Burmese War of 1884. In 1852, it was built by Ma Kin in Prome, Myanmar. It is basically a prayer hall or pavilion where one can see the image of Buddha. In the colonial era, in 1853 CE when Lord Dalhousie visited Prome, he decided to shift this beautiful structure to Kolkata with the purpose of the beautification of the city.
