    The Cenotaph of Raja Gangadhar Rao is also known as Raja Gangadhar Rao ki Chatri. He was the king of Jhansi. In 1853, his queen Rani Lakshmi bai was built the cenotaph near Mahalakshmi temple beside the Lakshmi Lake in Jhansi. It has myth that Rani Lakshmi bai visit the Lakshmi temple everyday. The cenotaph echoes the contribution of the forgotten king through the history of Jhansi. A lash green garden, a neighbouring pond surrounded the cenotaph. The cenotaph has rich 18th century architectural designs. The best time to visit the cenotaph is October to March.

    Raghunath Rai was reigned Jhansi until 1838. During his reign, the economic condition of Jhansi wasn’t stable. They faced so many crisis. Because of mass population, the revenue became decreased. But when Raja Gangadhar Rao started to reign Jhansi in 1843, the revenue increased two- fold. It was considered as the resurrection of the town.

    In 1842, Raja Rao married Rani Manikarnika Tambe of Varanasi. At the time of their marriage,  Raja Rao was at the age of 40 whereas Rani Manikarnika was only 12 years old.  Later on, Rani Manikarnika came to be known as Rani Lakshmi bai.  As his 4months old son Anand Rao died in 1853,

    Raja Rao adopted his cousin’s son named Damodar Rao for protection of Jhansi from the prying British eyes. A british officer witnessed the procession. He received a letter from Raja Rao in which Raja requested to seek kindness toward the child and his widow for their lifetime. Then in November, 1853, after Raja Rao’s death, the british East India Company which is under the Governor General Lord Dalhousie used the doctorine of Lapse. They unlawfully rejected Raja Rao’s request and took Jhansi as their own.
