History

In 1976, the Chennai Lighthouse took the position of the city’s previous lighthouse, which was located to the north of Marina Beach. Construction of the Lighthouse took about a year, and it was ultimately opened to the public in January 1977. However, for various reasons, it was closed to visitors from 1991 until November 14, 2013, when it reopened to both residents and visitors. Ever since, a lot of people come to this famous location to spend an exciting day with their loved ones.

One of the few lighthouses in India with an elevator within its interior, the Chennai Lighthouse allows guests to ascend to the observation deck.
