    History

    During British rule in India, the area around the church was occupied by a huge swarm of British and Anglo-Indians.  Since they were followers of Christianity, they asked the government to build a shrine for them. Thus, in 1844, the construction of the Christ Church began. The church was officially licensed on October 11, 1846, to conduct the Divine Discipleship Service, although it became the perfect symbol of devotion on January 10, 1857. When you are in Shimla and you see the silhouette visible from afar, it is probably the Church of Christ. Located near Iconic Mall Road, this church is the second oldest church in North India, next to St. John’s Church in Meerut.  This church is famous in every case.  Everything this place has to offer is perfect for tourists.  The view of the site from both inside and outside is simply amazing.

    With neo-Gothic style architecture, the Church of Christ has redefined beauty in its own unique way. Although the interior is quite simple and straightforward, the most interesting feature of this religious place is its five windows that attract tourists from all over the world.

    Windows are made of stained glass and represent the qualities of patience, humility, faith, hope, patience, and charity.  In addition, the height of Christ Church is about 90 feet and the architectural wonders are decorated by 5 tubular clocks and a clock.  There are also many paintings that depict the life story of Jesus Christ.  The building looks gleaming at night, as seen during Christmas and Easter celebrations.

    How to Reach

    Since Christ Church is located in the heart of the hill country, it maintains good transportation connections from all parts of the city.  If you are located near Mall Road or The Ridge in Simla, choose to go on foot.  You can also choose a private bus or a local taxi to get to your destination.  Christ Church is a few minutes’ walks from the Shimla US Club and just 3.6 kilometers from the city center.

        Distance from Shimla Railway Station: 1.99 km

        Distance from nearest bus stand: 1.2km

    By Road: Christ Church is located on a hill station in Shimla.  The best way to get around the city and visit various attractions, including the Christian Church, is to take a private taxi.

    By Air: There is no direct/low-flight connection from Shimla to other parts of India.  Although a new airport was built about 14 km from Shimla in 2017, flight activities are not frequent.  The nearest busiest airport is Chandigarh which is about 114 km away.  Chandigarh is directly or indirectly connected to Biman in almost every region of India.  After that, you need various other means of road transport to reach the place.

    By train: It doesn’t take more than 2 minutes to reach Christchurch from Shimla Railway Station.  It is only 2 km away from the church.  You can rent a cab or walk to your liking.
