History

In the 19th century, architects built the Cooch Behar Rajbari Park as a part of the Cooch Behar Palace complex. The Koch royal family, who ruled the princely kingdom of Cooch Behar, resided at the palace. The garden was initially designed as a personal retreat for the royal family. Traditional Indian landscaping ideas and then-fashionable European architectural designs have impacted the park’s layout and design. It was embellished with elaborate fountains, artwork, well-kept lawns, and flowering plants. The royals could escape the government’s demands in the park’s peaceful atmosphere. Cooch Behar was acknowledged as a princely state under the suzerainty of the British Crown during the time of British colonialism. However, the authorities granted some autonomy to the regional leaders to manage their respective territories. Subsequent princely state rulers continued to maintain and improve the Cooch Behar Rajbari Park. The royal family’s political influence decreased after India attained independence in 1947, and the princely states joined the Indian Union. The park progressively changed from being used only by the royal family to being open to the general public.
