    The Kataka Chandi Temple, situated in Cuttack, is an ancient temple dedicated to the Goddess ‘Chandi,’ the presiding deity of Cuttack, Odisha. The holy temple is located near the banks of the ‘Mahanadi’ River. It is widely famous for the annual ‘Durga Puja‘ and ‘Kali Puja‘ festivals. The ‘Durga Puja’ festivities are special in Maa Cuttack Chandi Temple, which takes place for 16 consecutive days, starting from a dark fortnight of ‘Ashwina Krishna Ashtami’ till ‘Ashwina Shukla Navami’ as well as Vijayadashami. The goddess, popularly called ‘Maa Kataka Chandi,’ sits and rules in the heart of the ancient city. She apparently has four hands holding ‘Pasha.’

    (noose), ‘Ankusha’ (goad), gestures dispelling the fear (Abhaya) and granting boon (Varada). She is worshipped as ‘Bhuvaneshwari Mahavidya’ (the queen of the universe) by Sevayatas, who belongs to Utkala Brahmins every day. Maa Chandi is widely worshipped in various incarnations of Durga during the Durga puja. In Cuttack, people strongly believe Maa Katak Chandi is the ‘Living Goddess’.

    Cuttack Chandi TempleThe Cuttack Chandi Temple is one of the most ancient temples of Odisha, which is located near the banks of river Mahanadi. Hundreds of devotees visit the holy Cuttack Chandi Temple, and this number increases to even thousands during the auspicious Durga Puja. Goddess Chandi is believed to be the Living Goddess by the mass of Cuttack and is said to be one of the forms of Goddess Durga. The temple has the idol of Goddess Chandi, which is also named Maa Cuttack Chandi, has four hands holding Ankusha (goad), Pasha (noose), gestures dispelling fear (Abhaya), and granting boon (Vardaan). Goddess Chandi is being worshipped everyday by the priests which are known as the Sevayatas who belong to the Brahmin community.

    History

    After the Late Sri Hansa Panda, his only son, the Late Sri Lakshmana Panda, started worshipping The Goddess in the same process and procedure. He had four daughters named Champa, Tulasi, Mali, and Malati. Those daughters also helped their father, Late Sri Lakshmana Panda, in the rituals (Seva Puja) of the Deity. Late Lakshmana Panda always prayed to Maa Chandi to have a son, and after praying so many days, he had a son named Sri Dayanidhi Panda, who also followed the footsteps of his predecessors. The Temple came to the limelight during Sri Dayanidhi Panda. The number of devotees increased during his period. He has six sons, who are presently performing rituals (seva puja) of Deity. They are Sri Narayan Panda, Sri Narahari Panda, Sri Somnath Panda, Sri Chakradhar Panda, Sri Lokanath Panda and Sri Ratnakar Panda.

    The above hereditary sevaks, along with their fourteen sons, are presently performing the Seva Puja (Rituals) in the Temple. The fourteen sons are Jagabandhu, Dinabandhu, Bikram, Gopal, Sarat Kumar, Sukhadeva, Bhagadeba, Manoj, Trilochan, Susant, Biswaranjan, Ramachandra, Pramod, Ranjit. It was established in 1946.

    By air: The closest airport, ‘Biju Patnaik International Airport’ (which is an international one), is almost 27 kilometers away from this area which is Bhubaneswar, Odisha. You can visit this place from outside of India. Apart from that, there are airports in Delhi or Lucknow that offer direct flights to Bhubaneswar. From the airport, you can easily get local transport to reach the site.
    By train: The closest railway station from the Cuttack Chandi Temple is less than 7 km away at the ‘Cuttack Junction’. This station is well connected with major areas of the country. From the station, you will get local transport so that you can reach the site.
