Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) connects New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal, India, with a 2 ft gauge. It was built between 1879 and 1881 and measures around 88 kilometers (55 miles) in length. It rises from roughly 100 meters (328 feet) above sea level in New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) in Darjeeling, using six zigzags and five loops to acquire elevation. The majority of the scheduled service is handled by six diesel locomotives, including daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum, India’s highest railway station, and the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Steam enthusiast specials are pulled by antique British-built B-Class steam engines. The railway’s headquarters are in Kurseong.
