History

The history of Dunagiri Temple is quite interesting. This Temple is located 14 km from the Chamoli district. This place is dedicated to Ma Durga. Legend has it that Hanuman Ji dropped a piece of the ‘Sanjivani buti’ mountain here while carrying it for Laxman. And this fell makes the place more auspicious. Since that day, people have known this place as ‘Doonagiri’ (‘giri’ meaning fell). People believed that the Pandavas Guru Dronacharya did Tapasya here, And the bronze plate placed inside this Temple dates back to 1181 AD. To date, it is one of the oldest temples in Chamoli.
