    Dungeshwari is popularly known as Mahakala Caves. Gautama Buddha meditated here for 6 consecutive years. In his memory, a gold statue of Buddha was made in a cave here. In another cave next to it, a 6 feet high statue of Buddha has been made. There are three (3) caves in total. The other one has a statue of Goddess Dungeshwari. The ancient name of Bodh Gaya was Uruwela. Buddhists consider this place very sacred. There are many reasons why this place is so sacred. The Buddha spent a lot of time in this place during his life.  Here he acquired knowledge from Pala Bodhi. Bodh Gaya is situated near the Lilajan River. The Buddha is practicing suicide six times in this place.
