It holds the past glory inside it. Garh panchkot is one of them. It is a wreckage fort located in the Eastern part of India under Panchet Hill in the district of Purulia, West Bengal. The palace reminds us of the Bargi attack during the 18th century. In fact, it stands as a testimony of the Bargi attack. Panchkot Raj family has constructed the fort. He ruled the area for over 800 years, from 940 to 1750 CE. The site includes the leavings of palaces, temples and fortifications which are showcasing a perfect blend of natural and man made advocacy. It is a historical site, and it is the best place for history enthusiasts.

    • Ruins of the Fort: The wreckage fort is itself the main attraction of the place. Singh Deo Dynasty was built it. It reminds you about the glorious past of the region dating back to the 16th century.
    • Panchet Hill: The height of the hill is about 2100 feet. You can enjoy the lush greenery and dense forests of the hill. It will give you stunning views of the surroundings. Besides, it can be the best place for trekking or walking.
    • Teracotta Temples: There are many temples which are decorated with captivating teracotta work. They relfect various architectural style like Pirha, Jor – Bangla and Pancharatna.

    History

    Garh Panchkot has a long, fascinating history. The site is famous for the Bargi attack. Even the history of Garh Panchkot is closely connected with the Bargi attack dating back to the 18th century. Singh Deo Dynasty, the ruler of the region from the 16th century, built the fort. The name of the fort Garh Panchkot has a significance meanings. Garh means fort, and Panchkot means hill on which it was constructed. The Bargis, who are actually the Maratha raiders, attacked Bengal, and they did significant destruction.  During one of the oppressions,  they were attacked. Garh Panchkot looted all of the precious things and left them as a wreckage palace. And what we see today is actually the leavings of the Palace. It helps us to know about the Bargi attack and Maratha raiders. So, A must-visit place in Purulia.

    Outside view: The panchet dam which has the height of 2100 feet offers you a panoramic view of the surroundings. From the hill, you can enjoy the Damodar river and dense- forests. The area around Garh Panchkot is surrounded by dense forests and undulating landscapes and picturesque environment and waterfalls. All of these make it a perfect place for nature livers. The atmosphere of the fort is tranquil and peaceful.

    Inside View: When you enter the place, you will first notice the ruins of the fort. You can explore the watchtowers, beautifully designed walls, and majestic gateways.  You can also witness a perfect blend of natural and man-made structures. Then, you will see some terracotta temples that are designed with intricate terracotta work. These also tell us the story of the ancient styles, including Pirha, Jor- Bangla and Pancharatna. There are many guard’s quarters that are located 600 feet above in the middle of the Panchkot hill. Large stone slabs are used to make these quarters. It also reflects the defensive structure of the fort.

    By Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearest airport to Purulia. It is about 90km away from the place From there, you can hire a taxi or any local transport to reach there very easily.

    By TrainThe nearest station to Garh Panchkot is Kumardubi or Asansol Railway StationFrom Howrah, you can take a train like the black diamond express, Coalfield Express, or Shaktipunj Express to reach Asansol. From the station, you can hire a taxi or cab to reach there.

    By Bus: Raghunathpur Bus Stand is the nearest bus stand to Garhpanchkot in Purulia. It is approximately 20 km away from Garhpanchkot. You can easily take any buses or hire a taxi to reach the place.
