    History

    Gundicha temple

The Gundicha temple which is known as the Garden House of Jagannath stands in the center of a beautiful garden, encompassed by compound walls on all sides. From the Shrimandira, the main temple of Jagannath lies at a distance of about 3 kilometers. At the two ends of the Bada Danda, which is the pathway for the Rath Yatra, the two temples are situated. A plain raised platform 4 feet high and 19 feet long is featured by the sanctum which is made of chlorite named Ratnavedi. It is the holy place where during the festivals, the deities are placed. There are two gates to the temple. The main one is the western gate. During the Ratha Yatra, the deities enter the temple through this gate. For the departure of the deities another gate, named Nakachana gate is used. The temple remains empty the rest of the year, except for the 9-day Rath Yatra when Jagannath is worshipped in Gundicha temple.
