Gurudongmar Lake is named after the famous Guru Padmasambhava, who was also known as Guru Rinpoche. This saint is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and he visited the lake in the eighth century. The frozen state of the lake is also associated with the saint, and it is believed that while returning from Tibet, he realized that it was revered as it represented the sacred site of Chorten Nyima.
